There are many aspects to the art of DJing. Besides having a passion for music, a DJ must also have a good understanding of the gear. It is also important to understand the dynamics of performance. The ability to get a crowd swaying to your tunes is certainly a part of it.

Yet another aspect of DJing more noticeable to others is mixing. Many believe that this is actually what DJing is all about. It is therefore essential that the DJs focus more on improving their mixing abilities. There can be many reasons why mixing is so important in Djing:

1. It is a part of the DJing culture

Mixing has been an inseparable part of the DJing culture for a long time. It all began during the time of the early hip-hop DJs. They worked out how to extend the middle eight bars by using two copies of the same record. The pioneers of early disco began re-editing the disco tunes to make them easier to beat mix. Since then, mixing has become synonymous, in a way, with Djing.

2. Mixing has become more exciting with new technology

With the advancements in technology, mixing has become even more exciting. It all started with looping. Then came ‘key lock’. Both of these techniques arrived with CD Djing. Later, the use of laptops made their presence felt everywhere and more effects were added.

With this, mixing became more powerful than ever before. Soon, DJs began to realize how mixing can be so much fun with the incorporation of the latest technologies.

3. Mixing has actually saved the art of DJing

Even with the best varieties, automix hasn’t been able to create an impact. The use of playlists as an alternative to hiring DJs during events hasn’t worked either. It is the ability to mix the tracks well that separates DJs from these solutions. The DJs can get quite creative while mixing the songs. This is an ability that playlists and automix can’t achieve.

4. It allows DJs to serve the audience well

A good DJ understands an audience quite well. When the crowd is not enjoying a tune, such DJs mix it immediately. This is done in such a way that the crowd won’t even realize it. When the crowd is loving a tune, the DJs double the length of such tracks.

They can even use some of their mixing skills to make the track even more awesome. Some songs have great instrumental sections, but the vocals are not that exciting. In such cases, the DJs use their mixing tricks and two copies to create their own dub remix.

5. It puts the DJ in charge

Mixing puts the DJ in control and the records merely become the tools. They need to say something with the tunes to stand out from the regular DJs. Otherwise, they’ll just be one of the folks who play the records. Mixing is one of the greatest qualities that a DJ can have. It is this quality that turns records into tools for creating music that sounds even more thrilling.

As they are in charge of the occasion, they can do what they think would be the best. They can shorten the track, lengthen it, shape the sound, re-edit, and remix. They can also control the crowd with the use of volume and special effects.

Earlier, an individual had very few career choices. The options were often limited to a few conventional streams. Some of those popular streams were medicine, engineering, teaching, and accountancy. This made the young adults tread the tried and tested path.

It was not at all satisfying to those who were not passionate about any of those areas. Today, there are many unconventional career options for everyone in the world. You might be aware of the exponential growth of the music and entertainment industry.

You probably won’t need to look elsewhere, as there are a variety of options in this particular industry. Among them is DJing, which would be a great career choice, especially for an electronic dance music (EDM) lover. Here, we’ve tried to give you some of the reasons why you must consider becoming a DJ:

1. A relatively stress-free profession

Many would agree that today’s corporate environment is extremely challenging and stressful. Those who work long hours at the office hardly get time for socializing or pursuing their hobbies. Under such circumstances, music helps them to unwind and release their stress. Now, imagine the feeling they’ll experience when they get into a profession where they’re surrounded by music!

DJing is one of those professions where you can live this experience. When you begin to live this experience, you’ll truly love your profession. There’ll be no room for stress and it will make you feel more alive.

2. Opportunity for stardom

When you’re a part of the music and entertainment industry, there’s always a possibility of achieving stardom. You work harder, get more creative, connect well with your audience, and give them the music they need. If you’re able to do this, you’ll surely become one of the most preferred DJs.

Your fame will grow far and wide. When it grows significantly that people begin to recognize you at a national or international level, you’re a star. Along with this stardom, you’ll enjoy some big assignments, lots of financial freedom, and industry recognition. This would obviously lead to greater job satisfaction.

3. Freedom to unleash your creativity

If you’re one of those regular employees, you can recall many disappointing moments. Your boss might’ve never allowed you to follow your heart and get creative. There are some organizations where you’ll never get to do that.

When you’re a DJ, you’ll be free to unleash your creativity as much as you want. You can become your own boss, set your own rules, and demand the pay you deserve. You’ll be free to try something new during every performance and even when you’re not performing.

4. Chance to network with the right people

This is another big reason why you must consider becoming a DJ. One of the most important aspects of this profession is that you get to network with the right people. DJs get to meet all sorts of people from different cultural backgrounds, geographies, and lifestyles.

You get to connect with people from different sections of society in this profession. They can range from small-time organizers to big celebrities and business tycoons. Networking with such people would increase your chances of bigger assignments and greater pay.

During your performance as a DJ, you must have the ability to play music continuously and professionally. This is one of the secrets that would make you a successful DJ. What really ensures the constant play of music are transitions. They are among the building blocks in the art of DJing. An effective technique of transition combined with good music are the essential ingredients that make your performance successful.

You must also have the necessary confidence in your equipment and a clear idea about what you want. Here we’ve listed some of the popular forms of transitions that the DJs use during their performances:

1. End-to-end

This simple form of transition is quite contemporary. You need to be sure when the current song is going to end. Once you know when it’s going to end, be prepared with the next song. It must be a strong and impacting song with a starting point that’s immediate.

You certainly wouldn’t want switching from the end of one song to a slow-starting one. The next song must be something that starts with a bang. As the current song ends, count the beats and bars to start the new song on a downbeat.

2. Fade

This form of transition is one of the best ways to move from one song to another. You’ll never struggle to move to the next tune if you know how to use the fade. It also gives you a sense of confidence that helps you in your performance. By fading a song, you tell the audience that the track is ending and another one is about to begin.

A lot of volume from the current tune is removed. As a result, the incoming tune dominates the moment it begins. If done smoothly and with confidence, the fade places give you control of where you make the switch.

3. The Cut

Unlike the end-to-end and Fade, the cut is an instant mix and is instantaneous. It is a clean-cut from a particular track to its next one. The power of this form of transition rests on three factors. One is timing, which is quite obvious.

The second is the choice you make where you do it in both your tracks. The third factor is your choice of the actual tracks. Upon getting these three factors right, you’ll surely deliver a successful performance.

4. The Bassline Swap Beatmix

You might’ve seen a DJ jumping around in an animated way, despite both the hands fixed to the mixer. Upon taking a closer look, you’ll notice what the DJ is doing. He or she grasps the knobs with the finger and thumb of both hands. When the moment is right, one twist of the two knobs makes the crowd dance to the next tune.

What the DJ is doing, in this case, is the Bassline Swap Beatmix. This form of transition is used by many DJs to play smooth and musically tight sets. This method of transition is quite simple once you’ve mastered the Single Phrase Beatmix.

5. The Single Phrase Beatmix

The term implies that you play both the tunes for one musical phrase. Usually, in a single musical phrase, there are about four or eight bars. In this form of transition, the incoming tune is prepared for the best mix. It is somewhere at the beginning in a section with drums. The tune is lined up one musical phrase before the spot you’d like to make it clear to your audience.

Double-check with your headphone if the tune lined up is sounding good. Then, over the top of the outgoing tune, make sure that the new tune is audible to the audience. Now, play the tunes together for a musical phrase and mix out the tune that’s about to end.

When you’re an aspiring DJ, you’ll need a good beginner setup. This is extremely necessary to train yourself to be a future DJ. Owing to the advancements in technology over the years, you can get the essential equipment without spending a fortune. Today, more brands are coming up with equipment for mobile DJs and bedroom producers.

Now, you don’t need to kill your DJing dreams just because you have a low budget. Another worry for you might be not knowing what are things needed in your setup. So, let’s begin with the essential DJ equipment you need to have as a beginner:

1. DJ turntable

You might want to be one of those DJs who like to perform the old-fashioned way. For this purpose, you need a set of turntables. These devices are basically CD or LP players. The DJ holds and reverses the slip pad to produce electronically simulated special effects.

The turntables also have several other functions that are not found on the regular CD or LP players. One example of such functions is flash memory storage for multiple tracks.

2. DJ mixer

When you’re using vinyl or CD turntables, a mixer allows you to bind the sound together. This makes DJ mixers extremely important in the equipment of DJs. A mixer allows you to make transitions between the tracks. It also lets you add many different features to your sound.

However, this would depend on the type of mixer you’re using. You can use a mixer to scratch in an appropriate manner through the slider. It can be used to create mashups with your tracks. A mixer can also be used for plugging in the headphones, speakers, or your computer for recording and mixing.

3. DJ Controller

By using a controller with your laptop, you’ll find it much easier to transport the setup. A DJ controller helps you control the DJ software on your laptop. It can scratch like a record player, play music files, and also add special effects. You can also use a DJ controller to create beats during your performance.

It can also be synced to your lighting to set up a light show that moves according to your music. Controllers include pushbuttons, jog wheels, faders, and other features. They can be configured the way you want to perform. This piece of equipment can save you the trouble of bringing your record collection to the show.

4. DJ Software

When you’re using your DJ controller, you’ll need some decent software to operate it and utilize your music library. The software adds effects, mashes up tracks, organizes files and playlists, and assigns sounds to your trigger pads. Besides all of these functions, you can do much more with the DJ software. Often, there’s an array of software included with the DJ controllers.

Such programs allow you to learn how to use your controller, begin mixing, and create your own music quickly. Some of the options in industry-standard software are Traktor, Serato, and Virtual DJ. Most of the DJ controllers come with a version of the compatible software. So, you don’t need to worry about buying software for your controller separately.

5. Monitor speakers

If you’re just practising and creating music at home, you may need a good set of monitor speakers. Headphones would be great if you want to mix without anyone hearing you. However, nothing compares to the experience of hearing your music through speakers.

Today, you don’t have to spend too much for getting a decent set of monitor speakers. You can use your computer speakers if you don’t want to spend on monitor speakers owing to budget constraints.

There are many places the DJs get their music from. If you’re an aspiring DJ or have just started DJing professionally, you need to consider a few things. Simply put, DJs are curators of music. They aim to utilize the power of music to create memorable moments for their audiences.

For achieving this purpose, they need to build a good collection of music. So, if you’re into DJing, you’ll be researching, sourcing, and getting a vast music collection organized. This is one of the ways to build your career in this field. To select the right tracks, you’ll need a good knowledge of music, both old and new.

It is a daily ritual for many DJs to listen to music and collect as much as they can. They use multiple sources in their search for some exciting music and uncover some true gems in this process. Here we’ve presented some of the best sources you can get your music from as a DJ:

1. Free DJ music downloads

A great way to get some good music is to download legally from the artist or record label. You can bookmark the websites of all your favourite record labels and artists. The next step would be to check whether they are running a mailing list.

Many of the artists and record labels often send out links to their exclusive tracks and some free music. An alternative way would be to message them directly and ask them for some free music.

2. Record shops

There are certain music retail shops, from where you can get some fabulous collections. They’re also excellent places to connect with people and experience a good musical environment. You can make a list of record stores in your neighbourhood and pay them a regular visit. By doing this, you’ll get to know about the latest releases. It is also a good idea to visit the nearest record store when you’re away from home.

3. eBay

In its heyday, eBay was one of the most popular websites for getting all kinds of stuff. Today, it has declined in popularity. However, you can still utilize this international platform to buy a good music collection. Many of the DJs buy vinyl records or CDs on eBay and then get them digitized.

On this particular site, you can pick loads of records or an entire collection at once. DJs who perform at weddings usually use this website for building a collection of classic hits.

4. Subscription streaming service for DJs

In recent times, there are some emerging services that offer streaming specifically for DJs. One of them is Beatport. It has a new service that allows you to pay for accessing their vast music library. You can do this with a monthly subscription. By using the service, you don’t need to buy individual tracks. It also has a variety of options in the subscription.

Some of them give you the chance to store a limited number of tracks offline. Using the subscription streaming service also has its downsides. You’ll need strong internet connectivity at the venue where you’re performing. In the absence of a reliable internet connection, you’ll need to depend on the downloaded tracks.

If you’ve just begun learning the art of DJing, watching an expert DJ perform can be overwhelming. The way the DJ controller with flashing lights and buttons is used seems like an impossible task. Well, a DJ controller is used to help you mix the audio files.

This is done by the controller while utilizing many of the other pieces of equipment. Usually, the DJ controllers are designed to mimic the classical way of two-CDJs and mixer setup. However, they can be designed to handle functions much more than this one. A typical CDJ and mixer set-up can be a lot more expensive than a DJ controller.

This is one of the major reasons why many DJs go for the latter. Some of the performers like to have plenty of sampler drum pads for the purpose of playing different sounds. A few others want to mimic a traditional DJ setup. Some want an affordable set-up to continue pursuing the art of DJing as a hobby.

Then there are those who are established DJs and always on the move. There are different types of DJ controllers available for all of these individuals. However, along with a DJ controller, you’ll also need the cables. Here we’ll discuss the three types of cables used in a DJ controller.

1. Quarter-inch Cables

You’ll be typically using these cables to connect PA speakers and DJ headphones to your sound system. Some controllers and mixers also require the use of quarter-inch cables. Quarter-inch cables are a popular type of cord for all sorts of DJ setups. For controllers, you can use these cables with around 20 feet of length.

You might be using these cables to connect to your PA speakers. In this case, you’ll need quarter-inch cables of a different length. You must get the ones with their length in the range of 50 to 100 feet. This would allow you plenty of room during your performance.

2. RCA Cables

There’s a certain type of cord that you’ll need for connecting the DJ controller in your setup. Such cables are known as the RCA cables. These cords are generally connected in the red and white ports on the back of your controller. They connect to the matching red and white ports on the audio interface you’re using.

In case you have an audio interface with only quarter-inch cables, you can get an RCA to the quarter-inch adapter. You must purchase a healthy chunk of RCA to quarter-inch adapters if you don’t have them already. These are the type of adapters that every gig bag of a DJ must-have.

3. XLR Cables

You may not necessarily use these cables with your DJ controller to connect to the PA system. Yet, they are used on audio interfaces, controllers, and mixers commonly for connecting to a microphone. Usually, you’ll not need more than a couple of XLR cables. You need one XLR cable to be used as your main microphone cord.

The second would be a backup just in case the other one breaks in the middle of a set. It’s always a good idea to keep yourself prepared. XLR cables are an essential component of a professional DJ setup. If you don’t already have the XLR cables, you must get them as soon as possible.

You’re probably wondering what makes a good DJ? Maybe you’ve just started learning or you’re trying your best to be hired for as many events as possible. The question of what skills or qualities you need as a DJ can have varying answers. Even if you ask this to a group of professional DJs, their answers can vary significantly.

All you’ll get from them would be some DJ jargon. They’ll tell you about mixing techniques and types of music to be played. However, there are certain qualities that you must have in order to be a good DJ. Here are a few of them:

1. Have highly organized music libraries

DJs who are among the best in their profession usually prepare well for their performance. They begin by trying to find out what type of audience would they behaving in front of them. It helps them visualize their set before performing in front of the audience.

Earlier, the DJs had to carry heavy equipment to their events. Today, with all the recent technological advancements, there is compact equipment available for DJs. They no longer have to carry the vinyl records and other heavy stuff.

They can carry their entire music library of mp3 files on their laptop. With this massive library, they need to organize the files in them for instant access. It is, therefore, extremely necessary for you to have highly organized libraries for fulfilling the demands of your audience.

2. Know how to set the tone for the event

For delivering a fantastic performance, it is not enough to just understand your audience. It is also essential to understand the whole environment. The type of music played during a competition would be different from a party. You must have the necessary skills and presence of mind to create the right mood for a particular event.

3. Vary the pace according to the mood on the dance floor

If you’re an experienced DJ, you’ll know that music varies greatly according to the mood and the timings. What is played at the beginning of the night is different from what is played during peak hours. You must know how to build the energy on the dance floor and play the music accordingly. Your performance would be the greatest if you manage to take the energy to upward momentum.

It must reach the kind of level that makes the entire dance floor erupt in a frenzy. Then, after a while, you must drop the pace down to allow dancers to take a breather. Some events don’t require this pace and you must maintain a certain format of music. The best example of such event would be a wedding.

4. The ability to mix or blend songs

Every DJ must be able to mix or blend two songs together. This is done in order to keep the dance floor swaying to the beats. If there’s a long pause between two songs, the audience would definitely feel irritated. So, the key is to maintain continuity of the tracks by mixing or blending them well.

Another aspect of this is to understand the keys. You must be able to identify the keys that evoke a particular mood or feeling. Major keys are happier and energetic, while minor keys produce the opposite effect.

Electronic music can be further broken down into many sub-genres. Although it has many different sub-genres, electronic music itself is a genre and can be confusing to many. There are numerous individuals who think that this kind of music is one coming from the popular DJs.

Electronic music is more like an umbrella term for the kind of music created using electronic tools or instruments. The first electronic musical instruments were developed towards the end of the 19th century. During the early 20th century, new electronic instruments were introduced and compositions based on them were created.

Today, this type of music has many varieties. They range from experimental art to the more popular electronic dance music (EDM). Here are some of the popular genres of electronic music that aspiring DJs must know:

1. House

Many still consider this genre of electronic music the best among the rest. It was among the earlier forms of electronic music and was formulated in Chicago’s black neighbourhoods in the 1980s. House music emerged after disco and was popularized by young musicians.

House music remains popular even today, as many DJs still play it during certain events and festivals across the world. Some of the classic tracks are played by them even today to get everyone on the dance floor moving. This genre has also influenced many other genres, such as hip-hop and R&B.

2. Techno

After house music techno was the second genre of electronic music to gain massive popularity. It was inspired by disco, house, and the music created using computers that came from Japan and European countries. Techno emerged in Detroit, the largest city in the state of Michigan in the United States.

While house music involved a lot of gospel vocals and piano-playing, techno focused on computerized sounds with mechanical beats. Many of the classic tracks belonging to the techno genre are still popular in clubs.

3. Dubstep

Dubstep emerged in the early 2000s in South London. It drew inspiration from related styles, such as dub reggae, broken beat, jungle, and grime. The origins of this genre in the United Kingdom can be traced back to the early 1980s.

This was the period when there was a significant growth of the Jamaican sound system party scene. The success and popularity of dubstep can be attributed to its mainstream exposure from DJs like John Peel. It was further popularized by the success of hits from American DJs such as Skrillex.

4. UK Garage

This is a genre of electronic dance music (EDM) that originated in England during the 1990s. Abbreviated as UKG, it was inspired mostly by a dance music style called garage house. It also included elements from jungle, R&B, and dance-pop.

The garage tracks feature chopped-up, pitch-shifted, or time-stretched samples of vocals. They complement the underlying rhythmic structure at a 130 BPM tempo. The sub-genres of UK garage include a 2-step and speed garage.

5. Drum and Bass

This electronic music genre is yet another creation from the United Kingdom. It originated in the rave and jungle scenes in the UK during the 1990s. Drum and bass are characterized by fast breakbeats that typically range between 165 and 185 BPM.

The fast breakbeats are complemented by heavy bass and sub-bass lines, synthesizers, and samples. This genre of electronic music is dominated by a small group of record labels. It mainly has fanbases in Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
